Background of the Study
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a significant public health concern globally, contributing to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension has been on the rise, posing substantial health challenges. Effective management of hypertension often necessitates a combination of pharmacological treatments and lifestyle modifications. Lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, limiting alcohol intake, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking, have been shown to play a critical role in blood pressure control. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are pivotal in delivering lifestyle modification counseling to hypertensive patients. Their role includes educating patients on the importance of lifestyle changes, providing guidance on implementing these modifications, and offering ongoing support to ensure adherence. This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led lifestyle modification counseling on blood pressure control among hypertensive patients at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the known benefits of lifestyle modifications in managing hypertension, many patients struggle to implement and maintain these changes. Factors contributing to this challenge include a lack of awareness, insufficient guidance, and limited support systems. In healthcare settings like Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in promoting lifestyle changes and achieving blood pressure control has not been extensively studied. Understanding the impact of such interventions is crucial for developing strategies to enhance patient outcomes. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the effectiveness of lifestyle modification counseling provided by nurses in controlling blood pressure among hypertensive patients in this setting.
